Intern Diary: Day 1

I’m a second year public relations student hoping to pursue a career within consumer PR. I’m about to embark on my first real experience within the industry by becoming an intern for 2 weeks at top consumer PR agency Frank PR. I’m going to be keeping a diary along the way to let everyone know the sort of responsibilities your given as an intern and what to expect!

Today was officially my first day as an intern at Frank PR. I had to wake up at around 7.30am to get the train and travel into the trendy offices located in Camden (which I can tell you was a pretty big struggle!). Once there, I was greeted by the lovely and bubbly office manager Emily who gave me a quick tour and introduced me to my team.

They were all really welcoming and got me set up on the computer and email systems straight away so that I could start working immediatly. My team leader Helena gave me a brief overview of their clients and the accounts which I would be working on. Next, I filled in a little introduction page with my photo, hobbies and a bit about myself which Emily forwarded to the whole office! It was a really nice touch as it made me feel welcomed to the team and one girl even came over and introduced herself as she was also a student at my university.

My first proper task was to make up packages with samples to send to some journalists before reading through the press release and actually ringing journalists to sell in the feature! It felt pretty dawnting at first as I had only been there about 40 minutes before I was expected to speak with real journalists on the phone! I really dreaded it as I didnt feel like I knew what I was doing but the more times I rang peole, the easier it got. It’s one of those things that you just need to get used to as it’s a massive part of the job!

My final task of the day was to travel over to the Adidas store in Oxford Street to pick up some clothes for the fashion team. They handed me an envelope of money and sent me off on the train. Although it seems a really basic runners job, it felt nice to be trusted to do something like this on my first day and gave me the chance to speak to some people outside my team.

I can already tell that my time at Frank is going to be fun and I’m intrigued as to what other things they will have lined up for me over the next few days!

I think it is brilliant that they trusted you to go to the Adidas shop. They will be giving you more responsibilities.

I agree that it is great they trusted her to get the goods from the shop as well.

Camden sounds like a cool edgy place to have a work placement.
